Review: Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals is Beyond Expectations

October 29, 2008 · Filed Under Nintendo DS News · Comment

Spectrobes might seem like a typical Saturday morning cartoon show trying to cash in and make boat load off a video game. Not the case, last year Disney Interactive Studios created a new franchise and by all accounts, it was a hit. The first games had you exploring the mystery of extinct, fossilized creatures called Spectrobes and using their power to defeat the evil forces of the Krawl. The sequel, Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals takes place months after you saved the universe from the Krawl. As it so happens, the Krawl are back and worse than ever. You play as Rallen and Jeena who harness the power of the ancient Spectrobes, once again, to restore order.

Video: ‘I Proposed by Hacking Chrono Trigger’

October 29, 2008 · Filed Under Nintendo DS News · Comment

We recently saw a wedding proposal enacted through a custom LittleBigPlanet level, but more recently, another gamer with a creative itch chose to scratch his by doing something similar, only with an existing game: Chrono Trigger.

It’s a tad lengthy, but the magic happens near the end, at around 6 minutes and 20 seconds.

And the best part? She said “yes.”

See what he had to say about the recreation after the cut.

Sears Gets Limited Edition DS Lite Colors and Bundles for Black Friday

October 27, 2008 · Filed Under Nintendo DS News · Comment

I’ve had my eye on a crimson/onyx DS Lite for some time now, but the Black Friday special at Sears may just distract me from that.Choose from the Ice Blue DS Lite with Brain Age and color-coordinated case, or the Mario Red DS Lite, similar to the normal DS that came with Mario Kart DS, only thinner, sexier, and packaged with the New Super Mario Bros. Both versions will only be available between 5AM and Noon on Black Friday, and I doubt they’ll even last that long. — GottaDeal.com, via KotakuI like how that Mario one looks, but I probably shouldn’t write off the crimson/onyx yet, since these are likely to go fast, and more importantly, I probably wouldn’t be able to get them in Canada, the fact we have Sears here notwithstanding.

That, and I already have New Super Mario Bros., which kind of puts a question mark on the value of the package. Make a good gift, I suppose.

Peggle for Nintendo DS Gets Officially Dated

October 26, 2008 · Filed Under Nintendo DS News · Comment

PopCap games have made a killing following a simple three step plan:
Create an addictive game that appeals to both hardcore gamers and alpha moms. Sell said game for every platform known to man.Count your money. It looks like they will come one step closer to accomplishing their goal of world domination, announcing a new installment of Peggle coming to the Nintendo DS.
“The Nintendo DS version of the addictive puzzle title is coming to the handheld on March 3, 2009.

The game, dubbed Peggle: Dual Shot in keeping with the DS’ theme of games using the system’s acronym as a subtitle, is being developed by Q Entertainment, the group responsible for Rez and Lumines.

Though the game is slated to have features not yet seen in Peggle’s PC or iPod incarnations, neither Q nor Peggle creator PopCap has yet revealed exactly what those new features will be.” — WiredI actually owe alot to Peggle. The iPod version was the only thing that kept me awake in calculus classes all through college. It was not that the game was all that great, it was just good, clean, mindless fun. You can bet that my wife won’t be seeing her DS much in March.

DS Fans Unite in Hopes of Breaking World Record

October 26, 2008 · Filed Under Nintendo DS News · Comment

In conjunction with the London Games Festival, DSLondonRecord.net is trying to make an attempt at a new world record. Organizers are hoping to set the record for the most simultaneous people playing Nintendo DS in the same room. A bit obscure? Absolutely, but intriguing nonetheless.

Here are the details:” To celebrate the London Games Festival 2008, we at DS:London in conjunction with the London Games Festival Fringe are organising a special WORLD RECORD attempt of getting the most number of DS players at one time in a room! This record attempt has been registered by Guinness and we will have an adjudicator on the day to confirm the (obviously successful!) record! All we need to do is to get everyone playing their DS in the same room for 5 minutes! Easy hey?

Our aim is get 500+ people to attend this very special event. We are planning to host this at the The Rocket Centre at London Metropolitan University on Saturday 25th October between 4pm - 5pm. This is open to ALL ages so tell your friends and lets break a record!” — DSLondonRecord.netI know that the Guinness Book of World Records has some pretty obscure content, but this just seems a bit ridiculous. Hell, I bet you could break that record on any subway car in Japan. So, are you going to attend?

This reminds me… I still need to get my hands on a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Anyway, this game still looks neat. It also reminds me, I need to finish reading/watching the rest of the original Dragon Ball.

Nintendo DSi’s Box is Very, Very Shiny

October 26, 2008 · Filed Under Nintendo DS News · Comment

Speaking of nice things that we can’t have, here’s one that kind of puts us all in the same boat. The DSi is launching soon in Japan, and already stores around the country are taking pre-orders for it (and I’m sure if you look around, there are importers here doing the same).

Thanks to Ota Road via Kotaku, we get to see what the box looks like. And relatively speaking, it’s what every other box of Nintendo hardware has been looking like as of late, but with one key difference I’ve noticed.

Look at how shiny that thing is! Which is interesting, as one of the things noted at Nintendo’s recent Fall Summit is how not-shiny the DSi is, sporting a matte finish instead.

Funny how that works out.

Media: Nintendo of Japan Gives a Video Walkthrough of DSi’s Features

October 24, 2008 · Filed Under Nintendo DS News · Comment

The following video is in Japanese, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect featurewise from Nintendo’s DSi handheld when it eventually debuts. This clip shows, among other things, DSi’s picture editing functionality and sound and music mixing features.

It looks pretty cool, though I’d rather see how these features will affect gameplay in upcoming DSi-only games. How about y’all? Are you impressed?
